eCommerce Websites
Overview
eCommerce is the complete set of processes that support commercial business activities over an electronic network. Historically this would have been the use of electronic technologies such as "Electronic Data Interchange" (EDI) and "Electronic Funds Transfer" (EFT), to send and receive documents and funds electronically. More recently eCommerce has been associated with the internet, business websites and more specifically online retailing.
Recent figures released by the Office for National Statistics ( ONS ) show that 61% of households in the UK have access to the internet, and 53% of all adults had purchased goods and services using the web. This is a rapidly growing trend and many small and medium sized businesses have benefited by adding an eCommerce website to supplement their existing sales. The selling potential of the internet has also seen an explosion of pure eCommerce "work from home" retailers that take advantage of low overheads, low set-up costs and the infinite customer base that the world wide web provides.
eCommerce Applications
In addition to retail websites the internet provides many facilities for businesses to share and exchange information with each other and their customers. Manufacturers use "Online Catalogues" to promote and explain their products, providing detailed descriptions, technical specifications, help pages, and electronic downloads for software interfaces. Couriers exchange information with their customers through secure websites to collect consignment details and provide real-time tracking data. Multi-site retailers can use a common database to exchange order details and stock levels, control availability and even place replenishment orders with suppliers. Construction companies use common web spaces to allow the secure exchange of information between their employees, the client, and their subcontractors to reduce timescales and control project progress.
These examples, online banking, price comparison websites and online radio stations, are a very few examples of eCommerce. The internet is a global network which allows the exchange of information anywhere in the world and when encompassed by business it can be used to increase sales, productivity and efficiency.
