 Animation

Animation comes in two flavours. Firstly we have "dynamic effects" which is also commonly known as DHTML and this is associated with those special effects you often see on websites. Common examples are "mouseovers" where a menu item may glow when the mouse moves over it, or "image swaps" where images change to display a new picture. These are very common with website designers and interact with the user to make the site exciting and dynamic. Image animation is the process of creating and joining several images to provide a "moving picture" similar in principle to a cartoon. These tend to include many frames, are far more complex than DHTML and are usually used to draw the users attention to a particular message. Whilst animated images are not used as often they are popular in delivering a high impact message or for demonstrating products in more than two dimensions. A common use of animated images would be to deliver a marketing message either for a sale, promotion, or new product range. The customers attention will invariably be drawn to the movement and the content could be delivered through a website, email, or even offline media such as a promotional CD. Examples of animated images are the mobile phone opposite, and the rotating cube on the previous page.
