Cookies

 Overview

A cookie is a small text file that is saved on your computer and used to store information that is specific to a particular visitor. They allow a website to personalise the individual‘s experience during their visit to the site by customising the pages or retrieving associated information from the server. Common uses of cookies include shopping baskets, user preference settings, retrieving usernames and welcome back messages. Without cookies it would not be possible to associate a visitor with any previous details and specifically for earlier visits.

 Facts And Fiction

Cookies can only save small pieces of information and they cannot run code or read, copy, or delete other files on your computer, be used to transmit information not contained in the cookie, or change your computers settings. They are created, read and modified by a website and can only be accessed by that same website. They cannot be accessed by a different website but they can be read directly from your computer if you know where to look. Cookies are not normally used to store sensitive information but if they are the website can encrypt the file to prevent unauthorised access directly from the computer.

You can disable cookies by changing your browser privacy settings, but in doing so it will mean that you will be unable to shop online and you will not be able to retrieve personal settings for many websites. You can also delete all existing cookies from your browser tools but again you will lose personal settings that were previously stored.
